Multimode couplers allow bi-directional coupling and are used to split or combine signals. Our splitter and combiners are manufacturedusing a fused biconical taper process on fully automatic fabrication platforms. We place two or more fibers adjacent to each other, then fuse and stretch them to create a central coupling region. A fused coupler structure is then formed by two independent optical fibers.
Multimode (MM) fused bidirectional fiber optic star couplers and optical splitters are capable of operating over a broad wavelength range (850-1300 nm). Multimode couplers are typically used for short distance data transmission. G&H multimode fused couplers can be used within fiber optic instrumentation, sensor systems and local area networks. Additionally, our multimode and large core couplers are manufactured and tested under fully-filled launch conditions. An underfilled launch may alter coupling ratio.
G&H’s multimode (MM) 1x2 and 2x2 fiber optic couplers and optical signal splitters can be manufactured using different fiber types such as 50/125 µm, 62.5/125 µm, 100/140 µm, and OFS 100/140/250 µm 0.2 NA graded index.
Our large core hard-clad silica (HCS) 1x2 and 2x2 fiber optic couplers and optical signal splitters are manufactured using different fiber types such as:
- 200/230/500 µm – 0.37 NA SI MM HCS
- 200/230/500 µm – 0.48 NA SI MM HCS
- 300/330/650 µm – 0.37 NA SI MM HCS

G&H’s line of micro optic based multimode (MM) modal insensitive fiber coupler components feature stable coupling/split ratios with different types of light sources such lasers, superluminescent (SLD) diodes and LEDs (light emitting diodes). Unlike the fused (FBT) multimode couplers/splitters, the micro optic based multimode couplers can hold the designed split ratio unchanged for any type of light sources used during operation and testing. The couplers are available in different split ratios (50/50, 10/90, 5/95) and can be made with either 50/125 or 62.5/125 multimode fibers. Other fibers and coupling ratios are available upon request.
